Mixed media canvas: tribal scene

Hello,
Today I'll be sharing a "quick & easy" mixed media canvas. .. yes you heard it right..
"Quick & easy" has become my mantra lately & is an optimum solution to accommodate craft when working on a hectic schedule. .

Decoupage is a very easy to do technique & gives stunning results. . Here's one..

image

I started off by applying gesso on my 6"×8" canvas panel board & then applied a coat of orange acrylic color (to match my bg)
I then pasted the tribal scene decoupage napkin on to it with mod podge... I dint care too much about straightening it out as it adds to the texture..
Then I've applied gesso on the edges with palette knife to form the border..

For the dimensional work, I've used M-seal.. after thoroughly mixing equal amounts of resin & hardener, I rolled it into a thin long wire.. cut into small segments & made the design over the border as well as the ornaments, spear & tree branches. . I've used acylic metallic colors to paint the ornaments & spear. .
Finally added some highlights with white gel pen...
image

On the backside, I've used orange paper to stick on & handmade the stand like my project here.

image

Gave a coat of modpoge to seal everything down. This kind of sums up the products used..

Done. Hope you liked it.  Do lemme know your comments.  Thanks for your time.

Happy 2015

Hi,
To begin with, am just too happy that I took forward my idea of art journal layouts & managed to complete one as well.
This is my first page. Am hoping to improve over time.
Here it is :)

image

A step by step would be too lengthy & eventually get boring probably. . I managed to capture just a few pics of my work in progress & am including them below..
And just some points to remember which may help me in the long run. Hope it's useful to some extent for you:)
I've incorporated most of the techniques I learnt from cardmaking here..
For the bg, i started off by stamping random images, scripts & graffiti with sweet plum ink.
Applied a wash of gesso. I used the one from camlin & I must agree that it was not upto the mark. I should start using my Prima heavy gesso soon I guess :)

image

For the coloring part I was not able to achieve satisfying results with inks.. so I had to go for acrylic paints.
Some texturing with stencils, stamping..

image

The parachute was handrawn, colored & cut. Glossy accents applied over it.
The Dolphin is from a cute sticker set I have in my stash.
Wood veneer boat inked with black soot DI,heat embossed with 'wow' clear glitter.
& here comes the part I love the most about this project.
'The waves'
I drew & cut individual curves out of Watercolor paper.
I used Peacock feathers & salty ocean DI, followed by lots of water misting to create the initial layer.  Then applied more DI over it & let dry.. added some splashes of white.. & finally my favourite technique in a different aspect. . Applying gesso over the edges with palette knife to create the foam effect. I totally love how it turned out :)
That's it for the making part.
(Click here to view the front cover of my journal)

Few personal words about this layout & reason behind the elements. .
Well, 2015... I had the best start of the year so far.. went for a sailing expedition in Goa with YHAI. It was such an awesome trip that I had to capture as much of it as possible in art & what better way to start my art journal :)
I've added "the awesome moments" sentiment for the same reason :)
We went for parasailing adventure sport & that's the part I enjoyed the most, hence it formed my focal point.. & then comes the dolphin sighting, sailboat.. & a thrilling experience with waves while crossing an estuary...!
I've added "clockwork" & "measured" stencils & gold paint over it coz the time spent was limited but more precious :)
& a camera stamp in bg for the amateur photography I did & the sun rays for all the suntan we got from the trip ;)
Now that'a a lotttt of explanation :D am hoping to do more pages in future & improve myself in the process :)

Do lemme know what you think of this venture. Thanks for your patience and time.
Create.  Have fun.

mixed media canvas : Together

Hello,
Here's another mixed media canvas work, the theme being "wedding" this time.

image

I was rather indecisive about the  colour scheme and settled finally with pink.
If  you find it interesting read on with my steps on "how to".

To begin with I formed a rough idea about the whole layout along with the embellishments.

I've used epoxy resin (shilpakar) as well as mont marte air drying modelling clay to make all the embellishments.
Here's a college pic of them.

image

Steps are quite simple & would take much longer & eventually boring if I go in detail about each one. The tuxedo, corset, corner swirl all follow the same scheme.
●draw outline in acetate sheet
●after spreading clay with roller into a flat surface,  cut around the basic outline
●add more clay on top to bring about dimension (for the corner swirl I used 3D liner for this purpose)
●flowers made by usual procedure (reference available in YouTube)
● coat everything with gesso.

image

●color with acrylic paint/inks after everything is completely dry
●added some bling with 3D liner..

(am not sure why, but modelling clay doesn't take gesso/acrylic colors too well & tends to peel off even after drying. inks work the best alternative medium for me)

the butterflies were marker pins, which I have bent in half, coated with gesso & colored.

Background:

for the BG I started by coloring with pearl pink, then pasted random pieces of PP  over that. used some inks on the edges to blend everything. added some texture with homemade modelling paste & Tim Holtz bubbles stencil.

image

I've stamped random images with postcard stamp set from itsybitsy collection. gave a wash of gesso to take everything more into the bg for a subtle look. also added some splashes of gesso.

I bought the lace from a local store which was quite cheap but less attractive.  I painted with white acrylic paint & the result was so much better :) then decorated with pink stones & sequins

image

The sentiment was made with 3D liner,in the same way I used here. (this is a wedding gift too :p)

Assembled all the elements & stuck with pva glue. I've also added vintage tag washi tape & tied to the tux with a twine. I coiled some craft wires (silver) to form the twiners.
I also added metal charms, bird cage & watercan.

finally gave a coat of modpodge to seal everything. The whole thing was tacky even after drying. a little research into the internet, and I found it usually happens with "gloss" type & minimum tackiness is with the "hard coat" type..
The way to fix this issue is to use a spray fixative. (I am yet to try that as my project, with a very thin layer of mod podge, finally dried after a week of air drying !!!)

I've pasted a gift wrapper on the back & I've made the stand like my previous project.

image

For digi remix,  I've changed the hue to my favourite colour :)

participating in the blog hop too :)

I'm a craft beginner so I don't have too many products from prima (the only one I have now is the Sunrise sunset PP collection) & those of which I have ordered for,are still in transit.
not sure if this entry qualifies but linking it anyway :)

hope you enjoyed this.
Ur comments mean a lot to me :)

Mixed media canvas - LOVE

Hello,

Today I will be sharing the mixed media canvas I created, once again a new venture for me. I thought of a starting with a different layout but bcoz of limited time I went for a simpler approach. I will be presenting this to my friend on her wedding. With more than Enough flashbacks, here's the work.

image

Read on if you are interested in the steps, digital remix at the end.

I used a 6"×8" Brustro canvas board. Stretched canvas panels are expensive so I didn't wanna start with that for my first attempt .
I used a decoupage napkin (heart and stones) and modpodge to cover the whole panel including the sides. It is a 2 ply napkin. Only the printed layer is used.

image

This is an easy way to create a background to work on. I didn't mind the wrinkles while sticking as they add more texture.

image

I gave a thin coat of dilute gesso to push the design more into the background. I used flutterby stencil with pearl pink paint initially,  but I dint quite like  the result as you can see.

image

So I decided to use modelling paste (homemade) for the same. I used other stencils (TCW ledger, tim holtz bubble) along with it to create more texture on the whole layout.

image

I used my mini mister to spray paints on the panel using blue, lemon yellow, pink all from the fevicryl pearl color set. Then I painted with some contrast colors to give a shaded effect. (Pearl green, gold, copper, silver) and Distressed the edges  (gathered twigs). I covered the sides with the same color scheme along with the main space.

image

I cut out the letters "LOVE" out of card stock. Added 3D Liner (pearl white) over it to get the dimension. I also dabbed some metallic silver paint to get more shimmer.
Stuck the letters with white glue on to the panel.

image

I also added the flower and pearl embellishments I made out of epoxy resin & air hardening clay. (I love the pearls ♥) I used glossy accents to stick them since I needed a strong glue. I added a string of pearls using 3D liner. Finally I gave coats of Modpodge to seal everything & give some lustre. I added some white splashes for added effect.

image

For the backside, I just covered the whole area with a brown cardstock. I cut out the stand from the cover of an old hardbound note. Coated with gesso & painted it.

image

Attached the stand with glue runner &white glue, just in case. (Fevikwik/ any resin glue would have been better,  but I didn't have it right then)

Ready to be displayed.

For the digital remix,
● I have used the decoupage canvas bg, added clip arts (corner swirl, humming bird) & some text randomly in "overlay" mode.
● D/l the quote image & added with "darken" mode.
● included the Butterfly clipart & Given brown vignette effect for the border.
● finally edited with HDR to give more definition to the image.

Hope you enjoyed it. Cheers.
Create. Have fun.
